Barbara M. Haig
Barb is the person you want on your team to help strategize and carry out communications initiatives. She has more than 30 years of experience in journalism and marketing and specializes in technology, sustainability, healthcare and manufacturing issues.
At Johnson Controls – the global leader in the global leader in smart, healthy and sustainable buildings – she was responsible for three areas:
• Executive Communications – Working with the Chief Information Officer on internal and external leadership communications, developing strategy and messaging, then coaching her to become an even more effective communicator.
• Organization Communications – Managing a centralized internal portal and ongoing communications for more than 1,700 Johnson Controls IT employees around the world, assuring that the people keeping the company digital to the core have a common understanding of corporate strategy, IT operating models and initiatives that impact their jobs.
• Employee Communications – Overseeing IT-related communications for more than 120,000 global Johnson Controls employees and contractors to keep them connected, secure and productive in the modern workplace. That often meant understanding and translating challenging concepts, managing difficult changes, inspiring continuous improvement – while sparking innovation and driving results.
Barb also has been involved in many communications projects, such as:
> Writing and editing white papers, case studies and articles on many topics.
> Planning, promoting and speechwriting for a major Washington DC energy forum.
> Managing a government proposal with environmental scientists in Saudi Arabia.
> Facilitating and moderating roundtables for senior global quality executives.
> Coordinating media and other logistics for two U.S. presidential events.
> Providing media relations for announcements, court decisions and other events.
> Project managing for supplier diversity and other events.
> Developing social media content, including newsletters, blogs and posts.
> Producing videos on healthcare, sustainability and other issues.
Barb formerly was a partner in Haig/Jackson Communications, a Milwaukee, Wisconsin -based communications consulting firm with expertise in:
> Conducting workshops on media training, crisis communications, storytelling and presentations for companies and organizations in the United States and globally.
> Providing written and video content on engineering, environmental issues, healthcare, energy, manufacturing and other topics.
> Offering other communications services such as facilitating World Cafés and leading innovative customer meetings, internal brainstorming sessions, and executive roundtables.
She has worked on hundreds of projects for companies and organizations such as ASQ (American Society for Quality), Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin, Greater Milwaukee Foundation, Harley-Davidson, Johnson Controls, Rockwell Automation, University of Wisconsin – Milwaukee College of Engineering, UTC Aerospace Systems and other confidential clients.
A former television reporter and producer in Milwaukee, Green Bay and Eau Claire, Barb spent three years as a senior account executive at a leading Milwaukee public relations/government affairs firm before starting her own business. Her work has involved contact and coordination with the White House, U.S. Congress, federal agencies, state and local government offices, and many local, national and global organizations. She also has been a lecturer in the UW-Milwaukee Department of Mass Communications.
A board member of Washington Park Partners, Barb has been active in several community organizations, including Milwaukee Press Club, FIRST Robotics, TEMPO, Friends of the Milwaukee Public Library, First Stage Children’s Theater, Camp Manito-Wish YMCA, Christ Child Society, and St. Sebastian Parish. Barb resides with her husband Dan Schley in Milwaukee's Washington Heights neighborhood and enjoys biking, reading and attending the theater.
