Sustainability Experience Barbara Haig has become an expert in the area of corporate sustainability, defined by Dow Jones as “a business approach that creates long-term shareholder value by embracing opportunities and managing risks deriving from economic, environmental and social developments.” A former television reporter and producer, she has handled dozens of energy and environmental projects for companies and organizations such as Johnson Controls, the Wisconsin Energy Conservation Corporation, the Alliance for Sustainable Built Environments and more. Her work often involves cooperative efforts with the U.S. Department of Energy and EPA, U.S. Green Buildings Council, U.S. Energy Association, National Energy Foundation, International Facility Management Association and others. Examples include: Planning the Annual Energy Efficiency Forum – Major participant in the planning of this prestigious Washington DC event, co-sponsored by Johnson Controls and the U.S. Energy Association, every year since just after its inception in 1990. The high-level, invitation-only gathering advances energy efficiency issues with the help of eminent speakers, such as U.S. Cabinet members, Congress members and international business and industry leaders. President George W. Bush spoke at the 2005 event; Sen. Hillary Clinton was the 2006 keynote speaker.
Coordinating Media Relations for a Wisconsin Visit from President Bush – Worked with the Johnson Controls team to coordinate a day long visit in Milwaukee from President Bush that included a national speech on energy issues. Barbara helped develop logistics, media relations, VIP involvement, employee participation and other strategies – all within a week of the event. Attending Energy Policy Meetings
Providing Media Training Seminars – Working with a variety of businesses and organizations, Barbara provides training and mock interviews for executives, resulting in better message delivery in media interviews. Authoring Sustainable Energy Education & Communications (SEEC) program – This 10-module series of lessons shows how employees can find financial, environmental and social benefits at work and home. SEEC is the first of its kind to demonstrate how saving energy and water, keeping indoor air clean and other sustainable strategies can save money, reduce emissions and help people stay healthy. Helping Develop the National Association of Manufacturers “Energy Efficiency Toolkit for Manufacturers” – This booklet was distributed to thousands of NAM members and others in an effort to provide information about saving money through energy efficiency. Coordinating Presentations on Sustainability Topics – Developed dozens of high-impact presentations for use in sales, marketing, government affairs, community relations, internal communications and government proposals.
